Summary: My main goal is to get Jersey parents engaged in
the idea of healthier food for their children, and to show them that preparing
‘Healthy’ food does not need to be expensive or time consuming.
child eating a strawberryFollowing the Annual Report conducted by Dr. Rosemary
Geller (Medical Officer Of Health) which was recently featured in the J.E.P,
I was shocked to read that “1 in 8 of Jersey 5 Year olds’ are considered
Obese, and nearly ¼ are overweight.) These are very concerning statistics,
and ones which I feel need to be addressed immediately, rather then in the future.
My first priority is to form a friendly support network of Jersey parents and
their children, offering and exchanging advice, and to campaign on topical nutritional
issues.
Once we’re established, some of our goals will be:
* To tackle nutrition in primary schools (e.g. lunchboxes), and discuss ways
to make them healthier.
* To fight to save our school milk.
* To campaign against vending machines in secondary schools which sell unhealthy
snacks.
I believe parents play an essential role in setting the boundaries of a child’s
diet.
Unfortunately due to the high cost associated with living in Jersey, often
one or both parents have to work, which means they are too busy to spend time
preparing a balanced lunch for their children.
